The meaning of Amah

A family name became a place to grow.

The name “Amah” holds a special place in founder Dr. Shaneen D. Moore’s heart. It began with her grandson, Micah, who called her “Amah” as an infant. What started as a child’s loving name for his grandmother became a lasting expression of their bond—and the inspiration for this business.

Amah represents love passed between generations, the grounding strength of family, and the beauty of nurturing something as it grows. That same spirit guides every plant we share and every relationship we cultivate.

Founder, Amah’s Urban Jungle Oasis

Care is personal.
Growth is communal.

As a mother, grandmother, and community-centered leader, Shaneen understands that care is both deeply personal and something we extend to one another. She created Amah’s Urban Jungle Oasis to offer more than beautiful houseplants and tropical plants. Her vision is to create experiences that encourage people to slow down, reconnect with themselves, and bring greater tranquility into their homes.

For Shaneen, plants symbolize growth, resilience, renewal, and purpose. Caring for them can become a quiet form of self-care—a practice that reminds us to be patient, attentive, and present. Through Amah’s Urban Jungle Oasis, she hopes to cultivate a welcoming community where plant lovers of every experience level can learn, connect, and grow together.

Care that continues

Your plant’s best life starts here.

Light

Match the light to the species

Learn whether your plant prefers direct sun, bright indirect light, or gentler filtered light. Introduce stronger direct light gradually, and watch for scorched leaves or stretched growth—both are signs that the placement may need adjusting.

  • Place sun-loving species where they can receive the direct light they need.
  • Give many tropical plants bright, indirect light to protect their leaves from harsh sun.
  • When natural light is limited, use a full-spectrum grow light. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for distance and timing, adjust for the species, and give the plant a dark rest period each day.
Water

Water the plant, not the calendar

Every plant has its own rhythm. Some need water more often, while others should dry more fully between waterings. Check the soil moisture and the weight of the pot before deciding—it is safer than watering on a fixed schedule.

  • When it is time to water, soak the soil evenly until excess water drains from the pot, then empty the saucer.
  • Never let roots sit in standing water. Overwatering and constantly wet soil can lead to root damage.
  • Choose a well-draining mix suited to the species. Chunky aroid mixes with ingredients such as bark, perlite or pumice can improve airflow and drainage between waterings.
Growth

Nourish healthy growth

Support new growth with regular plant food during the plant’s active growing season. Use a balanced fertilizer at the label rate—starting more gently for sensitive plants—and reduce or pause feeding when growth naturally slows.

  • Avoid fertilizing a dry, stressed, or newly repotted plant, and never use more fertilizer than the label recommends.
  • For humidity-loving tropicals, a clean humidifier can help maintain about 60–70% relative humidity. Use a hygrometer to measure the level rather than guessing.
  • Keep the humidifier a safe distance from leaves, furniture, and electronics, maintain gentle airflow, and clean it regularly so the plant and its surroundings do not stay wet.

Plant Shipping & Live Arrival Guarantee

At Amah’s Urban Jungle Oasis, every plant is carefully prepared and packaged with the goal of helping it arrive healthy, beautiful, and ready to become part of your own oasis.

Because plants are living things, they may experience temporary stress during shipping. Minor leaf yellowing, drooping, bent leaves or the loss of an older leaf can occur during transit and does not necessarily indicate permanent damage. Most plants recover quickly after being unpacked and acclimated to their new environment.

How your plant is packed

Shipped bare root, with roots protected in lightly damp sphagnum moss. Pot and soil are not included.

Shipping Schedule

Live plants are generally shipped Monday through Wednesday to reduce the possibility of packages remaining in carrier facilities over the weekend.

Orders may be held when severe heat, freezing temperatures, storms, holidays, or other conditions could place the health of your plant at risk.

When a weather hold is necessary, we will make every reasonable effort to communicate the delay. Protecting your plant takes priority over getting it into the mail during unsafe conditions.

Cold-Weather Shipping

Amah’s Urban Jungle Oasis is based in Minnesota, so winter shipping requires special care.

Depending on temperatures and the plant being shipped, insulated packaging and/or heat packs may be recommended or required. Additional winter-protection charges may apply and will be disclosed at checkout whenever possible.

Heat packs are intended to reduce exposure to cold temperatures but cannot guarantee a particular temperature inside a package throughout transit.

We reserve the right to delay shipment during dangerously cold weather.

Warm-Weather Shipping

Extreme heat can also harm live plants. During periods of excessive heat, we may delay shipment or recommend an expedited shipping option.

Customers should monitor tracking information and retrieve delivered plants as quickly as possible. Packages should not remain outdoors, in a mailbox, parcel locker, or on a porch during extreme temperatures.

Live Arrival Guarantee

We carefully inspect and package plants before shipment and stand behind their condition when they leave Amah’s Urban Jungle Oasis.

If your plant arrives with significant shipping-related damage, please email shipping@amahsurbanjungleoasis.com within 24 hours of carrier-confirmed delivery.

Please include:

  • Your name and order number;
  • Clear photographs of the plant;
  • Photographs of the shipping box and packaging; and
  • A brief description of the problem.

Please do not discard the plant or packaging until we have reviewed your request.

When a qualifying claim is approved, Amah’s Urban Jungle Oasis may provide an appropriate replacement, store credit, or refund, depending on the circumstances and availability of the plant.

What the Guarantee Does Not Cover

The Live Arrival Guarantee does not generally cover minor cosmetic damage associated with normal plant shipping, including an occasional bent or damaged leaf, temporary drooping, or normal acclimation stress.

The guarantee also does not cover damage resulting from an incorrect delivery address provided by the customer, packages left outdoors after delivery, failure to retrieve a package promptly, unauthorized forwarding or rerouting, or plant-care conditions occurring after delivery.

Carrier delays and extreme weather will be reviewed individually because circumstances can vary.

Receiving Your Plant

Open your package as soon as possible after delivery.

Carefully remove all packing materials and inspect your plant. Allow the plant time to acclimate before repotting, fertilizing, or making major changes unless immediate action is necessary.

Your plant has traveled to reach you. A little patience, appropriate light, and thoughtful care will help it settle into its new home.
